Brenda is so not okay with being a witch like her mom, and does everything she can to get out of magic lessons, much to her mother's frustration. To placate her, Brenda reluctantly agrees to go to the magic shop to pick out a familiar. She picks up a kitten, happy to get something cute and fluffy out of the situation, but is shocked when her kitten turns out to be Owen, a shapeshifter on the run from some very dangerous werewolves. This unusual premise is a great hook, and Brenda's generally upbeat and humorous narrative, punctuated by Owen's sarcasm, makes this an easy to read and enjoyable short story. The conflict may not be very complicated, but it does provide some room for a taste of danger, some drama, and a little twist, all of which wraps up in a satisfying conclusion. This is a fun short story with good dialogue, some cute characters, and a good amount of laughs. "Familiar" is a great pick if you're looking for something quick, fun, and well-written, and at $0.99, it's worth the money.Product details

Familiar is a short but really fun read!
Brenda is a witch in training who thinks she picked out her familiar, a kitten. Only to find out the her adorable kitten is really a hot shapeshifter on the run from the bad guys.
This was a short story that I read in like an hour. It is a quick read and there is not enough time for much background information or character development. This did not keep me from loving the story though. The plot and the characters were well written. I loved the cute romance that developed and how the story flowed along. I would love to see this written into a series, it's that good. This is a 5 star in my opinion and one of my favorite short stories.

Brenda is a witch...and not a very good one at that. Why? Because she just isn't interested in practicing witchcraft like her very talented mother. but to get her insisting mother off her back, she decides to give it a try. First things first, she must pick out a familiar...a witch's pet who will keep her company and help her with magic. Only she doesn't realize that the cute, little , striped kitten she chooses is a actually a shifter in hiding (Owen, who i like to call a werecat even though he prefers shapeshifter P)
As she helps out Owen, Brenda find herself drawn closer to him...and Owen could possibly be feeling the same way. Or is it just the witch.familiar bonding spell?
I loved this story! It was very cute and funny! I read the story sooo fast that when I came to the end I was sure I had skipped some pages, lol. It was that great! I really wish there was more to the story though..
BTW I read this story in a collection of anthologies, the book is Kiss Me Deadly 13 Tales of Paranormal Love
I probably wouldn't have purchased this if I had realized it was a short story, but the synopsis had me hooked from the start. I just wish it was a full-fledged book. I was just getting interested in the characters when it ended. Maybe Michelle Rowen will pick up the story line in the future!
I'm a Michelle Rowen fan so I wasn't surprised this short story was enjoyable. Though the story was short the characters were full-bodied and engaging. I could actually see this being developed into a series at some point. A were and a witch getting into all kinds of trouble. Especially since she's kind of behind on her witchcraft lessons.
I honestly wish this story had been longer but I enjoyed the short story. I definitely enjoyed the way she accidentally got herself joined with a shifter.
This was a short but adorable read. I haven't read all of Rowen's YA stories but have been a huge fan of her Sarah Dearly vampire novels. This was a cute bite-sized read perfect for one sitting, and I look forward to more of them!
"Familiar" is a great short story novel with a complication and a totally adorable kitten (as well as the adorable guy).
I enjoyed this book because it just cut to the chase. It didn't go into detail about the family witches history alot and just gave you a general idea.
The plot was good (not too biting your nails suspense but not weak either.) My expectations of the book were not that high (it is 99cents) but it just blew me away from the first page.
I would recommend this book to teens.
