Stage play. 5 M, 2 W. One set. Two acts. "I saw a storm coming from the North, a vast cloud with flashes of fire and brilliant light around it; and within it was a radiance like brass, glowing in the heart of the flames. In the fire was the semblance of four living creatures in human form . . ." -- Ezekiel 14 In a diner of the small town of Smithereens, three of the Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse wait, restlessly, for the Fourth Horseman to arrive and begin the end of the world. Cameron, a single man with aspirations of falling in love, stumbles into the diner, chasing a girl whom he has never met and, unwittingly, becomes that Fourth Horseman. As the others try to talk this Fourth Horseman into following his dream and talking to the girl, the other three slowly begin to realize what the Apocalypse is all about … that it has already begun, and that if they don’t do something quickly, it will pass them by. “What is the Apocalypse? Is it fire and brimstone and dieties passing judgement? Or is it just you and me … giving up?” The end of the world has never been like this before.

THINK - that's what the best pieces of theatre make us do.Awaiting the Apocalypse is a brave piece of literature with strong roles for sections of the acting community that normally get marginalized. Three aging men, the older the better. One phenomenal role for a middle-aged man and one for a middle-aged woman - the female role really impresses me because of it's depth, texture, and SUBTLETY ( something too rare in modern work ). One role for a younger man, late college age. And a small role for a young woman ( more a plot-point than fully-realized character ).
I found Awaiting the Apocalypse while researching potential shows for the 2013-2014 season of my theatre company, Dormant Phoenix.
Awaiting the Apocalypse is a strong show - at times funny, at times poignant - that leaves a lot in question. The best Art never provides us with all the answers.
Three aged men, three of the four horseman of the apocalypse, gather at a diner in the southwest middle of nowhere, USA. They're awaiting their fourth. A young man arrives, following from a distance a beautiful girl, and they believe, at least in part, that this young man, Cameron, is the fourth they've been waiting so long for.
The three "horsemen" provide a lot of the comedy for the show. They're old. It's never made clear if they ARE the horsemen of the apocalypse or why, if they are, they've been separated. At times they seem preternaturally aware. At times they seem old, tired, and dementia-addled.
Cameron has no idea what to make of them.
And, often, neither do we.
They are very real characters, yes, and would be in the right hands. They are also, at times, little more than caricature. The trick in staging this for an audience would be to find three men who were absolutely fearless who could add texture and depth in the subtext...who could play the slapstick without being the slapstick. Each has their own fully-developed persona and a good actor could take that and really make something of it.
The real meat of the show comes in the portrayal of the shows middle-aged protagonists. Dallas, the forever owner of the diner, is a rich three dimensional character. He seems to have been running this hole-in-the-wall of forever, caught in some purgatorial cycle since the beginning of time and destined to until time runs out. It already seems that time is running thin. His waitress/partner in crime could be his partner in so much more if only he would open his eyes. She has the same fully realized texture and depth - a dream-role for a middle-aged actress looking for a role to really showcase her talents and make her own. For me, it was these two that really jumped from the page. I found myself desperately wanting a happy ending for them.
Cameron, the supposed fourth horseman, and the young woman he followed into the desert...are less realized. One could, teamed with talented actors, flesh them out or leave them a vague points to the plot the way they at first read. I'm not sure either is a disservice to the show.
Aside from the middle-aged protagonists, the other major star of the show would be it's TECH DIRECTOR. There's a lot here from a technical standpoint. Lighting effects, necessary transitions, deep sound effects that enrich the scene and drive the plot. TECH is as much a character as any of the written characters, without falling to the depths of spectacle or distraction. A good tech director, like the one we have, could do a great deal with Awaiting the Apocalypse.
It's a good read.
I appreciate it's ambiguity. I suspect that when this show works, that's a great deal of the reason why.
I would love to stage this show, if I could find the cast. But I'd never stage this show unless I had a SOLID cast to build from. I'd never want to do it that disservice.
At less than $5 for Kindle, or free as a rental from the Kindle library, I encourage you to read it. It's well-worth the investment of your time and worth more than the cost of download. I hope that Vick keeps writing. I look forward to seeing what he works on next... and watching him develop his theatrical voice even further.
This show is brave, too rare a quality in modern drama.
